City & SALT To Tackle Silly Mountain

Excerpts taken from an article by Jill Jones in the September 17-September 23, 2007 issue of  The News.

Apache Junction Parks and Recreation and Superstition Area Land Trust (SALT) are joining forces in a scenic preservation and recreation project involving Silly Mountain, a steep peak rising between Apache Junction and Gold Canyon just north of U.S. 60. The city obtained rights to 2000 acres on Silly Mountain in 2006 after the end of a 20 year Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lease formerly held by Central Arizona College.

For years the mountain was subjected to the abuse of motorized vehicles and party goers who would often strew their trash across the mountain. Additionally, 4-wheel drive enthusiasts would try to tackle Silly Mountain's steep grade, which left an unsightly scar running up the face of the mountain.

SALT is working on a corporate assisted plan to re-vegetate and "descar" the mountain, which is adjacent to the multi-use trail system.

SALT did an on-site evaluation of the task which included the participation of an engineering firm and environmental planner.
