SALT Speaker Series Returns: Inspiring Conversations for Conservation

SALT Speaker Series Returns: Inspiring Conversations for Conservation

After a long pause, the Superstition Area Land Trust (SALT) is excited to announce the return of our SALT Speaker Series, in partnership with Apache Junction Parks & Recreation. These community events are designed to bring people together to learn, share, and engage with the stories, science, and stewardship that shape the future of the Superstition Mountains and their foothills.

A Tradition of Education and Conservation

For years, the SALT Speaker Series served as a gathering point for community members, naturalists, historians, and conservation advocates to explore the delicate balance between growth and preservation in the Sonoran Desert. After a few years’ hiatus, we are proud to reignite this important initiative — providing a space where residents and visitors alike can connect with the land, its history, and the people working tirelessly to protect it.

Our featured speaker, Charlie Goff, President of the Superstition Area Land Trust, will lead an important discussion on the sale of Arizona State Trust Land and its far-reaching impact on the views, ecosystem, and future of the Superstition Wilderness Area.

Charlie will also share insights into SALT’s ongoing conservation efforts, including long-term planning goals that aim to protect open space, preserve wildlife habitat, and support the public good through thoughtful collaboration and responsible land management.

Why These Conversations Matter

The Superstition Mountains are more than a scenic landmark — they are a living symbol of Arizona’s natural and cultural heritage. The surrounding foothills and Sonoran Desert habitat are home to a rich diversity of life, from resilient desert plants to unique wildlife species that depend on this fragile ecosystem.

SALT’s mission is to preserve and protect these lands for future generations, and the Speaker Series helps deepen public understanding of why this work is vital. By engaging with local residents, visitors, and policymakers, we can continue to promote responsible stewardship and community-driven conservation.

Looking Ahead

This first event marks the beginning of a new season of monthly presentations — each held on the second Wednesday of the month in partnership with Apache Junction Parks & Recreation.

The next presentation in the series, scheduled for December 10, will focus on “Dark Skies Efforts Locally, Countywide, and Beyond” — an illuminating look at how light pollution affects our night skies, wildlife, and desert communities.

Get Involved

Whether you’re a lifelong advocate for the Superstition Wilderness or just beginning to explore the beauty of the Sonoran Desert, we invite you to join us. Come learn, ask questions, and discover ways to make a meaningful difference in preserving this extraordinary landscape.
